OPINION & ESSAY
(by Mitsuko)

Essay Topic:

Is it better to have lived
in one place all one's life
than to have moved around?
Compare and contrast.

-------------

Since ancient times,
there seem to be
two prominent types of living:
settled and nomadic.

To give extreme examples,

settled people are those
who live in one place
almost all their lives
such as settled tribal Africans

and nomadic people are those
who frequently move around
such as modern business people
jetting around.

Both offer a different quality of life learning.

From a fundamental point of view,
no matter where we live, life is life,
and it is the same.

For instance, native Africans
and modern business people
both still have to take care of
their everyday matters and responsibilities;
there will always be challenges
in any environment.

However, the points of contrast are
what these different groups experience.

Staying in one place may give
those African people the sense of stability,
and help cultivate a deep understanding
and appreciation for the mother land and nature.

Meanwhile, moving around may give
those business people
a rich experience of excitement
and access to plentiful
information and resources,
which broadens their horizons
and expands exchanges between people.

In conclusion, being settled or nomadic
is not that important.

The most important thing is
to live consciously
here at this moment
with sincere appreciation,
no matter what kind of circumstances
we are in.

Otherwise, we will miss
the true gifts of experience
which life offers.
